I began the Flap support tubes and other wing steel parts by transferring all the full size drawings in the plans to AutoCAD LT. This gave me a source for exact copies of the parts. They were then rough cut out and attached to the steel sheets with a spray adhesive. I used a thin plastic self adhesive sheet sold at Home Depot to seal the paper from cutting oil etc. It also acted as a lubricant for the saw blade. The parts were then cutout on a metal band saw deburred and finished on a grinder and Scotchbright wheel. I then soaked them in MEK for a couple of minutes to soften the adhesive and removed the paper templates. To form the Support tube end plates I tried something a little different than Eric. First I cut two pieces of 3/4 X 2 X 8 steel bar and drilled them to allow 3/16 pins to center and hold the blanks for bending. This ensures the blanks don't move during the bending process. The blanks are then sandwiched between the two steel bars and clamped in the vise. A large hammer is used to form the parts. After forming the 3/4 hole was cut with a hole saw and drill press. The small ends have a square hole that was cut using a dremel tool and files. This procedure worked very well and produced very accurate end pieces. |
